“If There Was a God” : A ballad from singer-songwriter Cheri Lyn

“If There Was a God” is the latest single from German vocalist and songwriter Cheri Lyn. With one album and many singles under her belt, she has been given the awards “Best Rock” and “Best Singer” by the German Rock and Pop Association. While a lot of her music taps into high energy rock, this track is proof that she likes dipping her toes into melodic ballads.

Sonically the song is simple with keys and strings leading it, setting a sombre tone and letting the listener know what to expect. Cheri Lyn’s voice is husky and whisper-like and her almost country-like inflections grow on you instead of coming out the gate brashly. The percussion starts off minimally and layers itself as the song progresses, letting the anthemic effect of the track intensify over a period of time. I personally enjoyed the use of backup vocals that were simple yet innovative and effective. The vocal harmonies pre-chorus onwards set an angelic atmosphere that blends well with the theological lyrical theme.

Speaking of lyrical themes, the title of “If There Was a God” accurately suggests that this ballad is much more about the search for faith when faced with loss than faith itself. Theological themes like “devil” and “praying to God” are intentional and show up consistently. Cheri Lyn while mourning the loss of a loved one to disease reminisces about carefree days and the seemingly unending feeling of it all. She looks for faith in the face of death; she looks for answers in the face of illness.

In the hope that the loved one finds peace and hope, the confusion of faith not always leading to eternal love is apparent. “If There Was a God” has the capacity to be a companion to anyone dealing with loss.
