Eric Ludinart puts us in a trance with his debut album “Amours”

The Debut album “Amours” from Eric also known as Eric Ludinart ak Élude In Art, puts on display the artist’s capacity as an electronic music producer. “Amours” translates to ‘loves’ in French and the album as confessed by the artist explores eight forms of love through its eight tracks. Eric works in the realms of sound therapy, nature, spirituality and nourishment all of which show up at different points in the project.

The production of the first track “Reves d’Agape” roughly translating to “Dream of agape” in French” makes use of space really well. The sound is engineered such that different elements come towards you from different directions which creates an atmospheric effect. The track begins with a single hypnotizing sound that it lets the listener settle into before adding other layers like the rushing synth and the light percussion. The track plays with different energy levels for the same melody, adding to it and subtracting from it at times. The following track “Philautia” unlike “Reves d’Agape” starts with strong percussion that gets our head nodding and does not play with energy levels much, consistently giving us liveliness. The melody feels experimental and I personally really enjoyed the bass on this record.

Going by the title “Eros”, one might expect a melodic ambience but from the jump we are faced with clappy, rhythmic percussion that feels anthemic, motivational and influenced by Hip-Hop 808s. Being one of the shorter cuts on the project, the ways in which the track builds itself up in terms of elements and strips itself down before building up again and the fact that it plays with silence feels like a breath of fresh air. This is followed by “Mania” the longest track of the album that has elements of dance and disco sprinkled throughout. The track has heavy percussion that can get monotonous after a certain point as it doesn’t shift rhythm and the sonic experimentation seems to take place largely in the background. The synth that takes over being in non-sync with the key pad makes for a confusing yet interesting experience.

“Ludus” comes closest to being a conventional EDM track although it is added on to heavily by ambient sounds like water droplets, wind and air. The percussion sounds Eastern and the track plays with speed and pitch by adding and subtracting elements interestingly. The percussion in “Philia” reminds one of a heartbeat. The track plays much more with bell sounds and gives off the feeling that one is going through a scary, haunting vortex. I personally really enjoyed the shift in rhythm at the five minute mark. The heavy percussion and mysterious sound of “Storge” is only enhanced by the all engulfing overlapping synths. The last track “Pragma” places fast and urgent sounding percussion in juxtaposition with slower beats. The high pitched bell sounds also stand in contradiction to the bass that runs as an undercurrent. The synths make it feel like grand departure that ends rather abruptly.

It takes a lot for an electronic album without lyrics to keep a listener engaged but Eric Ludinart leaves us feeling like he has had fun and experimented with each sound to take it to its full potential. The sonic palette is an interesting and unconventional choice and like most electronic music, the charm of “Amours” lies in repetition.
