In Buddhist Zen philosophy, the word ‘Katsu’ means a sudden cry that sparks awareness. This song was originally written with the intention of being a finale performance piece on Hungary’s Got Talent. Even without the televised ending, the song has now stood on its own, just like it was meant to, resonating with Yamazaki’s life. Sonically, ‘Katsu’ is an expressive portrait of the emotional landscape rather than a restricted genre-bound arrangement. Lyrically, it’s a multilingual composition, with Japanese rap versions cutting through the track like unfiltered thoughts. The production has a very cinematic feel around it. It’s like listening to life’s rigorous chaos, and then suddenly there’s a rupture from darkness towards light.

‘Katsu’ by Yamazaki feels like hope; it is a song of honesty, persistence, and freedom. It speaks to those who have fallen out and again stood back. Knowing that this song took three years to come into shape makes perfect sense. It is a lived experience of the artist, like a personal manifesto.
