‘Supersonic’ was Oasis’s first single, written and recorded on 19 December 1993 and released 11 April 1994. The original version was recorded at the Limelight Club in Belfast, which coincided with the Band’s meteoric rise of the album ‘Definitely Maybe’ to the top of the UK charts.

A Little of ‘Supersonic’ History

‘Supersonic’ was penned in less than half an hour. From an impromptu session on December 19, 1993, the song emerged out of a break from the recording of the originally planned debut ‘Bring It Down’. While his bandmates dined on Chinese takeaway, Noel Gallagher, fueled by gin and tonic, wrote the lyrics at a supersonic speed. The song’s genesis highlights the spontaneous creativity of Noel Gallagher and brilliant collaboration of all the band members.

‘Supersonic’ means ‘that which is beyond sound’. And for 30 years this song has been transcending mere auditory experience! As recalled by then-Limelight manager David Neely, “The Sunday of the week the debut album was released, the Limelight show was the right venue, for the right band at the right time. Oasis was 500 people sold-out at the gig with tickets only £6.75!”

‘Supersonic’ had entered the UK singles chart at Number 31 on Sunday 17th April and stayed on for 60 long weeks! On this 30th anniversary a replica of the original CD single and a limited-edition vinyl has been released for sale. Furthermore, Noel hinted at an expanded edition of “Definitely Maybe,” promising previously undiscovered treasures from the Sony vaults—a testament to Oasis’s enduring legacy.
