Ode to the Classic ‘Blister in the Sun’ in an Acoustic Way by Nick Babcock

Nick Babcock is kindling an amorous side to the all-time favourite, alt-pop-rock of the ’80s, ‘Blister in the Sun’. This 1983 Violent Femmes’ biggest hit, has been covered by many musicians. The funky 40-year-old track has taken exclusive shape in many artisans’ hands. Yet Bramton-based Nick Babcock’s version stands out vehemently. His acoustic and soft drumming on ‘Blister in the Sun’ is surprisingly fresh, loopy, and addictive. From Victor DeLoreno’s unforgettable drumming and Gordon Gono’s wonderfully nasally distinct version, Nick Babcock’s approach to the song is delightfully romantic.

The original thrives on its raw energy and the then-new punk-infused buoyancy of the ’80s. This acoustic version, however, leans more into the song’s vulnerability. Perhaps Nick perceived the pain of restless youth energy that lay just beneath its carefree surface. This version feels softer, more intimate, and gives off a cozy, indie room-concert vibe. Beyond the jangly strums, the lyrics take center stage, and that actually shifts the preconceived meaning of the song that many listeners once held. This stripped-down rendition creates space for a deeper emotional resonance. Give Nick Babcock’s warm and fuzzy vocals a listen with a cup of something hot on a rainy day. The cover is sure to make your day.
