Singer-songwriter, hip-hop artist and producer Statz highlights the importance of telling stories — and most importantly, telling them the way we would want others to see it too. This is what drives his musical pursuits, and his journey truly is one to sit back and admire.
After previously releasing Wmb and Regrets, and teasing STRIDES from his latest six-track EP LOVE/LIFE, Statz is emerging out of be one of the leading voices in trip-hop, neo-soul and neo-psychedelic hip-hop songwriting. On GANGSTALUV, all of these traits come into complete fruition. The short two-minute track is almost a chant out to Statz’s African-American roots and his journey from childhood, where he stresses the importance of ‘keeping it gangsta’, in an attempt to preserve the conventions and heritage that has moulded him across the years.
With vinyl crackles, mellow electric piano arpeggios and the four-bar percussive arrangement, Statz manages to offer the track a reimagined lo-fi-esque vibe. Through its lyrics, the track also exudes emotions of lovesickness and heartbreak in modest confessions. Statz brings into the world of gangster rap a sense of humanity and empathetic relatedness, where people feel drawn towards the story of this New Yorker in an attempt to synonymise it to their own.
