TITA NZEBI - ARROGANCE

‘Arrogance’ by Tita Nzebi is a Song of Inner Authority

Can standing in one’s own grounded, spiritual truth be arrogance? That which stands out like a rare proteegee, unapproved, unwelcomed by the rest of the world, can it look like arrogance? I guess the answer is unapologetically, yes! My search for understanding the lyrics of ‘Arrogance’ by Tita Nzebi took me down a rabbit hole of an unknown language. Tita is a tiny woman with a surprisingly powerful voice, as quoted by Emmanuelle Viora in La Renaissance du Loir et Cher, after seeing Tita Nzebi perform live. Known to be a favourite among children and parents for her lullabies and nursery rhymes, Tita’s latest album ‘Reminence’ revels in her spiritual side. ‘Arrogance’ is the eighth track on this brilliant 10-track album, which explores the essence of her salient Self. The song is about the creation of an identity that has emerged over these years of devoted music.

What is seen as an intimate co-creation with the spirit might be seen as arrogance by those who remain in the darkness of spirit’s light. The disconnect from the soul remains as the core reason for the chaos in the world today. And Nzebi’s music is the channel through which she takes us on a wild ride towards light. The linguistics identified here are Central African, which the internet helped me figure out. I only wish there had been the lyrics that would’ve brought me closer to the local emotions. The folk, tribal element to the music is what brings out the character of dance and merry-making. I guarantee that your body will simply start grooving once you play the song. But I must say that it is the vocal prowess of Tita Nzebi that is the pivotal point in her music.
