Shani Weiss released her New EP after almost seven years since her debut album. And ‘All About Life’ really feels like a collection of these past few years of Shani’s life. A highly talented, Melbourne-based singer, songwriter, and composer, Shani Weiss, captures the true meaning of what encapsulates life. This half-dozen-song-long EP, ‘All About Life,’ culminates Shani’s experiences in the following tracks.
The EP begins with the namesake track, All About Life, and is a song full of realisations. With catchy guitar riffs and drums, the rhythm instantly takes a hook. Shani’s voice personality is very transparent. It’s got a very striking character, like a light being switched on inside a dark room. Lyrically, too, it parallels a similar theme, carrying revelations that say, “Getting older is no fun!”

In Two goes deep in its theme, “This is the second time I’ve been here, no longer naive anymore. This is the second time I’ve been here, but I’m so much stronger this time. So why can’t I say all I think to your face?” The words in this song carry personal mystery, which only perhaps Shani knows. Although the meanings reflect differently for each listener. To me, it’s a song about life’s challenges, and lovers holding the mirror to the shadowy sides that force out a solid definition to existence. The chorus really highlights the layers of the deep questions that we seek from life.
The keys play a key role in this song. Rules Don’t Apply introduces a pensive mood to the EP as we go within it, balancing the songs on the edges. A beautiful song on how one’s vulnerability is, in the true sense, the real strength. Listening to Rules Don’t Apply is like hearing the soul’s language. The realisation of this emotion has been masterfully crafted in words and into the production of this song. It’s one of my favourites in the list.

A song about the realisation of release. What’s Left is Shani’s artfully crafted track about purpose and getting down to releasing it from the bindings of the soul into the life that is to be lived. The flute flawlessly synchronises with the airy thoughts and contemplations, and rightly brings focus on the action needed. What’s Left is a song of self-realisation that we can also dance to, and is my second favourite.
Breathe is a very anthem-like, with the melody and production surrounding the theme of devoting oneself to breathing deeply in times of pain. “When the time came, all I heard was a voice, guiding me through all of the noise. Bringing my light into the dark, to brighten it up.” This line speaks to all those in pain with assurance that when the time is right, the guidance shall come. I know how painful one’s journey has to be for someone to be able to write such a song.
The last is not the end. As the EP rounds up, Feel Alright feels just like its beginning. A bright indie pop track, Feel Alright is the light at the end of the tunnel. Follow Shani Weiss on Instagram and listen to her latest EP ‘All About Life’, now streaming on Spotify and YouTube.
