Body’s new single “I’m Still Alive” sounds like if a fever dream had a soundtrack. Led by Paul Hawley, best known as a founding member of Canadian rock act Hot Hot Heat, the track kind of takes you into a trance-like zone and then brings you back to reality. It’s very reminiscent of the psychedelia-drenched indie-rock sounds of bands like Radiohead and Tame Impala.
The track opens with indie rock, post-punk, synth textures all clashing together to create controlled harmonies, colliding with experimental elements. It’s quite strange when you’re listening to it for the first time, but it eventually grows on you. I would call this song more of an acquired taste.
Hawley’s vocals do not stand out by themselves; instead, it become a part of the instrumental cornucopia. I think that’s what gives this track its unique flavour and keeps you entranced in its soundscape.

One of the biggest strengths here is the production. Layers of synths build a rich backdrop while distorted guitars add grit and edge. There are even moments of raw noise woven into the mix, giving the track a slightly rough-around-the-edges feel.
Underneath so many crazy sonic textures, a warm and steady bassline builds the foundation. It brings everything together while the drums keep things in motion with tight grooves and well-placed fills. Nothing feels wasted or “too much” in this idiosyncratic soundscape.
“I’m Still Alive” is a fun little experiment that Hawley has gifted to his fans. But even for a first-time listener like me, I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you’ve been craving indie music with a little more personality and edge, “I’m Still Alive” is worth adding to the rotation. It dares to step out of the comfort zone, it’s catchy, and slightly messy in the best way possible. It’s a refreshing addition to the genre.
