DownTown Mystic turns a Road Trip Into a Six-Song Playlist Worth Replaying With “Mystic Highway Road Trip”

There’s a very specific feeling DownTown Mystic’s EP “Mystic Highway Road Trip” nails – windows down, phone on airplane mode, and pretending your commute is a scene from a movie.

Rather than feeling like leftover material from last year’s “Mystic Highway,” this EP gives the songs a fresh setting. Robert Allen, who writes and produces the project, ties everything together with a road trip theme that fits naturally with the ethos of the band.

The tracks, “Live” and “Losing My Mind,” bring plenty of energy right away. The entire EP is super coutry rock and these two songs nail the formula to the T. They are crafted around catchy hooks and driving guitars, but there is also a subtle punch to stop things from feeling dated. Jerry Fierro’s harmonica adds more personality to “Live,” while Lance Doss delivers impeccable guitar work on “Losing My Mind” that makes you wanna frolic and dance to it.

The chemistry between the musicians is insane. You feel it in every note. Steve Holley on drums and Paul Page on bass lock into a groove that instantly catches your attention. It feels dynamic, and the songs have the confidence of a band that’s enjoying the ride as much as you are as a listener.

The EP also contains the previously unreleased track “Somebody’s Always Doin’ Something 2 Somebody (Uncut Mix).” The extended arrangement keeps it just as cool, especially Jeff Levine’s piano and B-3 organ.

“Superstar” (which is a tribute to the legend Sir Elton John), “Shadow Walk” and “Fly” (a tribute to Buddy Holly) keep things alive. Joe DeMaio’s guitar adds a grittier texture to the mix. Allen keeps the songwriting simple, focusing on more on catchy choruses and melodies instead of unnecessary studio tricks. That simplicity works in the EP’s favour.

If you’re a Gen-Z listener who mostly discovers music through playlists and short-form videos, “Mystic Highway Road Trip” offers something different. It reminds you that classic rock can still feel exciting when the songwriting is strong and the performances are genuine.
