Fashion Turned Into a Walking Art Gallery at the Met Gala 2026

Every year, the Met Gala promises spectacle, but 2026 really understood the assignment. With the theme “Fashion Is Art”, celebrities showed up, treating their outfits like museum exhibits you could actually move in.

What resulted was a red carpet that felt less like a runway and more like a chaotic, fabulous art history class.

Big Brains & Bigger Outfits

This year’s brief asked guests to think of the human body as a canvas, tying into the Costume Institute’s “Costume Art” exhibition.

And honestly, celebrities took that very seriously. We saw everything from literal painting references to sculptural fits that looked like they’d been borrowed from a gallery.

Some stars clearly did their homework. Others… maybe skimmed the Wikipedia page.

1) The Ones Who Understood the Assignment

Let’s start with the overachievers.

  • Gracie Abrams slayed the house boots down. She showed up channeling Gustav Klimt in a shimmering Chanel moment. It was detailed, rich, and instantly recognisable if you’ve ever Googled “fancy gold painting.”
  • Rachel Zegler leaned into full drama with a look inspired by The Execution of Lady Jane Grey. Dark, theatrical, and very on theme.
  • Alexa Chung brought softer energy with a Monet-inspired Dior outfit that felt like spring decided to attend the gala.

2) Sculptural, Surreal, Slightly Unhinged

Then came the outfits that made you tilt your head and go, “Okay… I think I get it?”

  • Cardi B went full surrealist, reportedly inspired by Hans Bellmer’s doll sculptures. The vibe was eerie, exaggerated, and impossible to ignore.
  • Kim Kardashian leaned into sculptural territory with a metallic, body-focused look that blurred the line between clothing and installation art.
  • Bad Bunny‘s look was the most interesting one in my opinion. He became a character, appearing aged through intricate prosthetics like a painting come to life.

3) The Crowd-Pleasers (AKA Internet Winners)

Some outfits just clicked instantly.

  • Kendall Jenner and others referencing classical sculptures brought that “museum but make it hot” energy.
  • Charli XCX and Emma Chamberlain mixed art references with modern silhouettes, making them feel current rather than costume-y.
  • Hailey Bieber and Tessa Thompson went minimalist with bold colour inspiration, proving you don’t need a giant headpiece to stand out.

4) The “We Need to Talk” Category

No Met Gala is complete without a few confusing entries.

Some celebrities played it safe with standard gowns that barely nodded to the theme. Others went so abstract that the reference got lost somewhere between the limo and the carpet.

And then there were outfits that made people ask the ultimate Met Gala question:
“Is this genius… or just random?”

What made 2026 interesting is that it wasn’t polished in a predictable way. It was messy in a good way. People experimented. Some failed. Some absolutely nailed it.
