In a ruling that shakes up both the legal and music worlds, a California appellate court has dismissed Katherine Jackson’s challenge to a massive $600 million deal between the estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Music. The deal, which involves a significant portion of the King of Pop’s catalog, is now clear to proceed, following the court’s recent decision.
Kathrine Jackson Fights Against the $600 Million Deal Between Michael Jackson’s Estate and Sony Music
Katherine Jackson, the mother of Michael Jackson, had fiercely opposed the transaction, claiming it violated her son’s will. She argued that the will required all of the estate’s assets to be distributed to a trust benefitting Michael’s children and herself once probate—a court-supervised process for resolving disputes over the will—concludes. Her main concern was that transferring the estate’s “single most valuable asset” to a new joint venture would make it impossible to fulfill her son’s wishes, particularly the eventual transfer of the entire estate to the trust.

The California Court Approves the Deal
However, the appellate panel didn’t buy it. In their ruling, they described the 2022 Sony deal as a “joint venture” and noted that the estate’s executors, John Branca and John McClain, had the legal authority to make such a deal while the estate remains in probate. They also emphasized that the will of Michael Jackson gives these executors “broad powers” to manage estate property during this period. Essentially, the court agreed that the deal with Sony does not diminish the estate’s value or interfere with its eventual transfer to the trust.

The ruling marks another chapter in the complex saga surrounding Michael Jackson’s estate, which has been in probate limbo since his untimely death in 2009. With this decision, the estate executors are now free to finalize the Sony deal, adding yet another layer to the legend and legacy of the King of Pop.
