You’ve heard protest songs, you’ve heard satire songs. Now, get ready for Kosmox by BAÏKI, which sounds like humanity’s worst traits turned into a weirdly danceable thought experiment. Well, that’s the best way I could’ve described it. This underground project from Belgium led by Phil, has been OD’ing on idiosyncracy ever since his first release, and this time has also not been an exception.
The concept sounds ridiculous at first. What if the only way humans could finally stop fighting each other was by finding aliens to hate instead? However, behind this playful sci-fi background lurks a pretty uncomfortable question about whether people actually need a common enemy to feel united.
No matter how serious the subject matter sounds, Phil doesn’t take to doom-and-gloom to express it. Actually its quite the opposite. Kosmox radiates into exuberant energy, catchy repetition and pop-punk elements. It’s one of those songs that emanate a vibe that feels almost too cheerful for what’s being said. You catch yourself headbanging along with the first note. But since the lyrics are in French, some of you might have to take the internet’s help to decipher them. And you’ll find out that the song is just roasting centuries of conflict, nationalism, and human ego.

Sonically, the track is tight and direct. There’s a subtle new wave streak running through it with enough energy to keep the message from turning into a sermon. The chorus is catchy, partly because it sounds fun and partly because it leaves an uncomfortable aftertaste once the meaning registers.
The music video also doubles down on DIY aesthetics and big ambitions. Phil playing multiple versions of humanity gives the whole thing the imagery of a school science presentation gone completely off the rails.
By the end, you’re left with a catchy tune and one mildly cursed thought: maybe the aliens should stay hidden.
