The Radio Legs return with an anthem for the youth called “Viraha Vimanam”

Radio Legs follow the same trajectory a lot of art in Kerala takes. They are a young band with fresh perspectives, a group of four who know how to create music out of everyday conversations, cinema, and, most importantly, life. Their latest song is called “Viraha Vimanam” and it follows the tale of many young minds who feel trapped in a certain state of being. We asked the band some questions about their journey and this track. Here is what we got from them:

1. The journey seems to be a very important theme in your music. Is this intentional or something you eventually chance upon?

I think it happens naturally. Most of our songs are inspired by real experiences rather than fictional stories. We write about change, loneliness, hope, relationships, and finding your place in life. That’s why the idea of a journey keeps appearing in our music. It’s more about life’s journey than travelling.

2. Wanderlust seems to be central in Viraha Vimanam. Is this a certain assurance that people need to feel the raw feeling of being lost?

Actually, Viraha Vimanam (Plane of loneliness) isn’t about wanderlust. It’s about loneliness, emotional exhaustion, and feeling stuck in life. The airplane is a metaphor for someone who has lost direction and purpose while the world keeps moving. We wanted to capture that feeling honestly because it’s something many people experience. At the same time, the song reminds us that even in our darkest moments, the hope of a better tomorrow never completely disappears.

3. What are some influences that are not very evident in the style of music you make?

Life is our biggest influence. Apart from that, we’re inspired by folk music, poetry, films, books, and everyday conversations. Sometimes a simple memory or a small moment becomes the starting point of a song.

The song uses space, a memorable chord progression, and relativity in lyrics to form an incredible recipe. The Radio Legs continue their legacy after Njan In and Out to make music for the everyday soul. There’s a reason songs like Pukapadalam are repeat listens for their fans. Whether it is a sense of discovery or expressing innate emotions from the heart and mind, the band captures it all in thr blink of an eye.

4. What would you say is the band’s most natural method of composing music?

Most songs start with a conversation, an idea, a lyric, or just an emotion. Then we all jam together, experiment freely, and let the song grow naturally. Everyone contributes, so the final version often surprises even us.

5. This song seems to have a stadium chant embedded in it that will be echoing during live gigs. Did this come naturally too?

Yes, it was completely unplanned. We never thought, “Let’s make a part for the audience to sing.” While rehearsing, that section just happened naturally, and everyone in the room started singing along without us asking. That’s when we felt there was something special about it. It didn’t feel like a crowd chant. It just felt like the song needed that moment, so we kept it exactly the way it happened.

6. Radio Legs are the new wave in Malayalam Rock. What would you like to say to other aspiring artists who want to foray into this genre?

First of all, I don’t think we’re a new wave. We’re still learning, still experimenting, and still finding our own sound. We don’t choose a genre or try to fit into one. We just make the music that comes naturally to us.

To anyone starting out, I’d say be honest with your music, don’t chase trends, keep playing live, and be patient. If you stay true to your voice, the right audience will find you.
