Charlie Steady may be as light on his feet as he is while navigating these notes. If you haven’t heard of this indie wizard, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. His musicality combines simple songwriting and prominent flourishes that accent each song with different style. Unfulfilled Genius of Martin Street is no different.
I suspect Charlie to be playing each instrument heard in this song. With the playful lightness that samba brings, Charlie layers instrument after instrument to create a fairly simple stack of notes working in unison. The true essence of samba if you ask me. The guitar tone is a sweet undertone with compression that Mayer has popularized, and fits perfectly with the overall tonality of the track. The lyrics are written in awe of a hypothetical character maybe, and sings praises about this personality.
The beat is especially captivating in the song. As Charlie has worked as a bassist in bands earlier, the juxtaposition of bass in this track also can be noticed as a captivating anomaly. The chorus has a special jump to it, making a fun song sound even better. The guitar solos follow simple notes, in line with the vocals. The sound has climbed several rungs since his 2018 album Tenderfoot.
