Fanny Alexandra’s “Crown of Glass” Turns Insecurity Into Main Character Energy

Being a celebrity might look all glam and lush from the outside, but it comes with its own set of challenges. Fanny Alexandra’s “Crown of Glass” mirrors this messy world of appearances, validation and the exhausting pressure to look like you have everything figured out. But when you hear the song, it sounds like it is having way more fun than the subject matter suggests.

Here, “crown of glass” directly borrows from the metaphor – glass house, i.e., transience and fragility of superficial things. “Crown of Glass” refers to a fragile “crown” or a grandiose sense of self made from other people’s expectations. The pop track takes a sharp look at this superficiality and the need for external approval. There is a sense of frustration running underneath it all, like finally getting tired of playing along with a version of yourself that was never really yours.

Alexandra’s vocals are the real attention-grabber. She sings with the attitude of a true pop star, backed by a healthy dose of anger and angst. She sounds daring and bold, giving the track that slightly dangerous edge that Halsey and Billie Eilish fans will probably eat up. The vocal performance also gives “Crown of Glass” its innate personality. You can practically picture her staring down the very people who made her feel like she needed that crown in the first place.

The production deserves a lot of credit too. Everything feels ridiculously clean. The drums, vocals and other details slot together with the kind of precision you get from a really satisfying puzzle. The interplay going on between the subject and the overall soundscape is noteworthy. The subject matter deals with insecurity, isolation and disillusionment, but the track carries serious main character energy. It feels made for that very moment when you are done seeking approval and decide to walk into the room like your own it.

If pop with a little bite is your thing, Fanny Alexandra might have just handed you your next repeat listen.
