‘Black Tear Tracks’ by Koori King of Country Roger Knox, Symbolises Sacred Disconnection

No pain surpasses that of a Creator having to part from their creation, unwillingly. The outcome from the intensive labour of creation is the sweetest of all divine gifts—mother & child. And the abandonment of tearing apart this relationship is felt through generations. Roger Knox, also known as the Koori King of country music, has released his original ‘Black Tear Tracks’. A song that gives a sense of this generational grief. You can feel it in your bones, the sheer reverence with which this multi-award-winning Australian indigenous artist, Roger Knox, retells the story of his mother’s life. His voice carries a quiet ache that reaches deep into the listener’s heart.

What makes this song even more heartbreaking is that Knox only learned about his mother’s estrangement from her parents and culture after her death. This must have made him endure the loss twice over. Grieving not just her passing, but also the unresolved pain she carried. One can only imagine how Roger must have broken his heart again and again as he missed the chances to comfort her or hold space for the child within her whom others had left behind. This song prompts us to reflect on the world we live in today, where people are drawing invisible boundaries across lands. But the innocent deeply feel the harshness of division and carry its weight in their hearts, minds, and bodies.

It reminds us that separation is a false reality, a delusion born of the dark shadows of power, control, and greed.

‘Black Tear Tracks’ touches listeners universally, even through its specific story. The music embraces country in its original form, but it draws its roots from ancient folklore passed down by word of mouth, through songs. Listen to Roger Knox’s original track on music streaming platforms.
