Proklaim is a British-born, Namibia based rapper. His latest single “Bienvenidos” meaning ‘Welcome’ in Spanish is a short track to which he brings his wisdom, voice and rap game!
The sonic palette of “Bienvenidos” is mysterious, Jazzy and overall, such an interesting choice for Proklaim who has been experimenting with different genres and stepping out of his comfort zone of hip-hop and afrobeat recently. The percussion does remind one of Afrobeat, but since it uses lighter tones compared to the drums or 808s, it is able to add its own unique touch. The horns are one of my favourite elements for they add a classy and sophisticated touch, while the bass runs smoothly in the background.

The songwriting has the line “Finding a way to make this work” repeating itself multiple times, using repetition as affirmation. “This” can be anything, it could be life itself, it could be art, it could be relationships, but it left me with a feeling of hope. It doesn’t rely on things working out, but places action and “making it work” at the centre. Proklaim mentions how everybody loves beef but the rappers take the bullets and this can be interpreted as a direct comment on the contemporary rap beef that the hip-hop community and pop-culture at large have been obsessed with, with references to the beef that led to the demise of Tupac and Biggie.
