‘In A Vacuum’ by Jenny Räisänen is a piano-led pop ballad that captures a moment of helplessness that’s on full display. It moves from a space where our narrator is trapped, whether in their mind or physically manifested, to a space where the narrator can breathe and (maybe) carry on.
The song begins with a haunting piano melody, that’s dark and solitary. Its lyrics describe moments where our narrator isn’t seen or hard, almost as though they’re squished against a glass and no-one can see or hear them. We even take a gander into their spiralling thoughts, urging them to “…breathe slowly…”.

‘In A Vacuum’: Seeking Connection
‘In A Vacuum’ describes wanting sensation, but not feeling it. Knowing hunger but having no appetite. Its lines move from a space that is isolated and lonely to one that feels connection and is on the precipice of realising that that moment of connection is tangible. The lyrics speak of desires that are suppressed, settling in a place that feels unknown but familiar.
“…I press my hand against the glass,
Damp outside, I feel the drops in my dry hands…
…I scream loud, no one can hear me , I am soundproofed…
…I am hungry but no appetite, no sense of taste…”
There’s a sense of urgency throughout ‘In A Vacuum’, a sense that in this little space outside of connection there is a need to preserve what is already there. The lines come out like words of caution, holding back the protagonist with a fierce sense of protectiveness almost.
“…Doom, doom, doom.
Breathe slowly,
Save the air in a vacuum.
Now one can hear…”.
The last refrain of ‘In A Vacuum’ by Jenny Räisänen feels like release at a point when hope seems lost. There’s a moment when that repeated action “…I press my hand against the glass…” seems rewarded with a sincere moment of connection.
“…I close my eyes.
I’ll never know you pressed yours against mine…”.
The protagonist can now, finally just “…breathe…”.
