Kid Lightbulbs is a solo music project based in Massachusetts undertaken by Brandon Lucan Green who writes, sings, performs and produces it all. Although he has only started releasing music recently, Brandon already has 5 singles and one album under his belt with “ritual (I never want to end this)” being his 6th and latest track. His training in classical piano and music degree in composition and theory are put on full display on this single.

“Ritual (I never want to end this)” is really well produced with minimal electronic elements used to their full potential. The production emphasises ambience by playing with and creating space. The track has hypnotising synths and one layer of keys that are sombre and deep and another that is high pitched and cutting. The light percussion travels on top of your skin without ever sinking in. The deep voice of lead vocalist Kid Lightbulbs feels like a warm hug and makes great use of reverb. The vocals do not overpower the instrumentation and the harmonies make for a spacey effect. The bridge is elaborately layered through repeating chord progression, leading towards a great build up with the humming in the background making it my favourite section of the track.
Lyrically Kid Lightbulbs sets a sensual mood expressing desire for a particular period of time to never end. Words like “Surreal”, “Enlightened” point towards the spirituality within the practice of sexuality. The line “This is not a game it’s a ritual” is repeated, perhaps pointing towards the gamification of modern dating which can isolate it from real human experience.
The track is tender and tingly. Its uniqueness makes it difficult to bind it to any one genre definitively. The instrument-heavy electronic single would make for a great addition to a larger project by Kid Lightbulbs in my opinion!
