‘A Story’ by Richard Green is a tête-a-tête of a Modern Life with an Ancient Life

Listening to A Story felt like time-traveling between bygone eras and the present day. This ageless piece is the newly released ornamental instrumental single by London-based composer Richard Green. There is something almost comical about the repetition of life, no matter which age of human history we belong to or which time of human evolution. The highs and lows, the joys and losses, the love and numbness form a cycle we humans continue to dance through. And, A Story by Richard Green embarks upon a similar journey, with its pure, unique feel.

This beautiful, nearly four-minute composition mirrors the play of life. The string quartet symbolizes the four stages of life, while the piano serves as the steady rhythm of life. The piece arrives like a toddler’s eager sprint, then gracefully transitions into the youthful years brimming with liveliness, joy, and hope. Whether growing up in a medieval castle or modern apartment life, the thrill of discovery and the light of new perspectives remain timeless.

The story then moves into concurrent adult responsibilities, which also come along with finding love and the experience of marital life. And thereafter arrives the duty, whether it once meant tending to land and its subjects in a past era or caring for a family of four in today’s competitive world. Around the third-minute mark, the composition reaches a powerful climax. Like a reminiscent of going to war, mirroring the modern mid-life crisis, the inner battle to endure and survive. Finally, tracing the full arc of life. A Story invites listeners to imagine their narrative and weave their own story, just like I did.
