“Either Way” by Rob Elo: A melodious story, delivered singer-songwriter style

Rob Elo is a singer-songwriter from British Columbia, Canada, who is a proponent for honest, simple storytelling in his songs. On his latest release, “Either Way”, he brings forward a fusion of elements ranging from alt pop, soul, blues and country to make something quite special. Keep reading for my thoughts!

The sing starts off slow, with a simple plucked guitar line, complemented by a gentle synth line in the background, as the percussion starts off and gently eases you into the song. The percussion is of much interest here, due to its unconventional meter and sound choices, that bring a good deal of interest to the song right from the very start.

Rob makes smart use of his soothing, melodious voice to layer harmonies that yield a layer more of dimensionality and meaning to the song, and help make the song sound a whole lot fuller and filled with variety, which is something I quite appreciated.

As we settle into the hook slowly, all the elements come together, and coupled with Rob’s harmonies and adlibs that form nice counter-lines and countermelodies, it ends up sounding comforting and soothing overall. The quirkiness in the production shines through here, with unconventional sound choices that keep the song interesting throughout its runtime. Bravo!

“Either Way” by Rob Elo personifies an approach to songwriting that hunts for one’s own unique sound above all else, and I think that is beautifully achieved here. I think this song is great and definitely deserves a place on your mind this week! Check out the track here:
