“Innocent”, by Blind Man’s Daughter : A silken blend of hip-hop and angelic vocals

Blind Man’s Daughter, led by Ashley Wolfe, is embarking on an exciting musical journey with their upcoming album “Protect”. While Ashley is steering towards a more pop-focused sound, she’s making sure to keep the band’s unique progressive edge intact— and part of the journey is their latest single, “Innocent”— keep reading for my thoughts!

Dotted with pianos and high register vocals from the very beginning, Ashley Wolfe nails the intro to the song, giving the listener something to swing their heads to right from the start of the song— while her vocals remain the star of the show, with her mezzo soprano voice hitting notes high and low without much difficulty at all— while the rest of the ensemble keeps up with grace and keeps the listener engaged. There’s some great work happening with the articulation of the vocals, and Ashley’s raw, emotive power in her vocals really shine through, especially during the verses and the pre-choruses, lending an element of connection and power to the song.

There is also much to appreciate about the control in the instruments, which do not sound like they overextend for a moment throughout the song, exhibiting excellent control. The production takes on a bit of a modern hip-hop avatar, with the hard-hitting kicks and the hi-hats that have a lot of bounce and character— while the low, woofer-shaking basses form a solid low-end that “Innocent” is centred on. Couple this with solid balance throughout the spectrum, and you have a track that remains enjoyable to listen to, for many repeats to come.
