Annie Anna explores the detriments of “Fame” on a new Folk track

Annie Anna is a singer-songwriter based in Tucson, Arizona. Her journey with music is heavily inspired by her father who is also a musician. She travels between the genres of folk, indie rock and alternative pop and is self-admittedly inspired by artists like Hozier and Matt Maeson who do the same. She is no stranger to live performances and has been releasing her own music since 2018. Her latest single “Fame” comes as her sixth genre-blending release.

The sonic palette the track starts off with adds a modern touch to folk. The single note electric guitar instrumentation has a twang to it and makes the Hozier influence on Annie Anna evident. The simple yet anthemic and bass -heavy percussion adds rhythm and energy to the song which is further enhanced by the claps that come in slightly later in the track.

The three-minute track travels from one genre to the next seamlessly. The middle sections with ethereal acoustic strings and ambient echoed out vocals add a pop effect while the ending with its classic yet rare and joyful environment swings much more towards rock. Annie Anna has a voice that is captivating and really joyful to listen to. She uses it boldly in her vocal performance without compromising the husky quality it has innately.

Lyrically the track begins by calling out a friend who has changed as a person over time, but as it progresses starts to feel like reminder to oneself. Words like “Media fixation” and the title of the track “Fame” hint at the feelings of vanity and the desire to be a “sensation” taking over actual substance. She speaks about “selling your soul” and playing the game only for fame which are all themes that occupy an artist’s mind in the social-media-driven hyper-capitalist landscape under which art making happens today.

The cover art with the black and white Instagram selfies by women who fit conventional beauty standards ties the song together perfectly. Make sure to check out the track here:
