Sinosoidal interviewed Pjos as he released his second dream-pop number in May. ‘Atlas’ is an evocative blend of ambient and electronic elements that feels deeply immersive and intimate. Pjos is an all-rounder musician, songwriter, composer, producer. Here is our conversation with him.
1. The world has no idea about Pjos, except that he creates music sitting in the beautiful Baltic city of Gdansk, Poland. Tell us about your childhood and how music entered your life.
I was born in Brazil, where my father was a professional singer in the ‘seresta’ genre, a popular style in the country mid-last century. Growing up in this environment, I was constantly surrounded by music, attending my father’s concerts, and interacting with prominent Brazilian musicians. This early exposure deeply influenced my love for music. Nine years ago I moved to Poland, where I finally feel at home.
2. You mentioned your inspiration from The Secret Stars that made you conjure your debut number ‘Shoe In’. Tell us a little bit about how you kindled your passion through this stretch and what was it that made you finally find your voice for the journey to unfold.
Even though music has been a part of my life since birth, it wasn’t until recently that I began creating my own music. The song “Shoe In” had an important role in my journey. It resonated with me deeply, inspiring me to create my own version as a way to explore my musical abilities. This process was a significant step in overcoming my fears and mental blocks. It allowed me to find my voice and express myself through music. Creating my interpretation of Shoe In marked the beginning of my transformation from a music fan to a self-taught artist, and it was a powerful breakthrough that set the stage for my own original work.

3. Listened to ‘Atlas’ first and instantly was reminded of Sigur Ros. We would love to know the story behind ‘Atlas’.
Atlas is a deeply personal song that reflects a challenging yet meaningful period in my life. As a child, I used atlas books as an escape from a violent home environment, which eventually sparked a passion for astronomy. This connection to the cosmos is why all the Atlas artworks have a celestial theme. The song also explores how the scars of childhood trauma can linger throughout life. Atlas was the first song I wrote myself, symbolising a personal breakthrough and the realisation of a long-held dream. It’s a reflection of my journey and a testament to the healing power of music.

4. The visuals, production are gorgeous. Are you the one-man mind behind the complete process?
Thank you! Yes, I am a one-man band in many ways. I handle all aspects of my music, from writing and recording to production and promotion. This hands-on approach allows me to maintain a close connection to my art and ensure that every element reflects my vision. It’s a lot of work, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see my ideas come to life exactly as I envisioned them.
5. When can we look forward to hearing your next number? Is there any EP/Album in the making? Have you been playing for the live audience, any lineups currently?
In a few weeks, I’ll be releasing an EP with alternate versions of Atlas, providing a full picture of the Atlas universe and offering closure to the main story. I’m also working on a new song, which I’m very excited about! While live performances are still a bit far in the future for me, they are definitely something I look forward to. My main focus right now is to continue creating and releasing new music, and I plan to release more singles in 2024. I’m eager to see where this journey takes me, and I keep myself open to opportunities to grow my career.
