Plastic Tofu is the punk rock music project by Chicago based artist Janusz Domaszuk. His debut EP “Freedom” was released in 2015 and since then his attempt has self-admittedly been to push the boundaries of punk while paying homage to it. His songwriting is socially conscious and his latest release “Sundowner” is a wholesome tribute to nomadic youth.

The single starts off like a hardcore punk rock track, filled with a groovy riff on the electric guitar and hi-hat heavy percussion. The vocals however are surprisingly smooth and reflect the boy-ish charming youth of Plastic Tofu. The layered vocals set a cool, soothing and peaceful ambience painting the track as one a listener could play on a long journey during a cool summer. The track’s strength in my opinion lies in its capacity to balance the hardcore with the delicate. Even when the track picks up energy, it does in an endearing manner rather than going places that are intense or dark.

Nostalgia looks pleasantly upon all the joy in the past; “Sundowner” however remembers all the troubles and worries in the past and sees the present as complete. The songwriting invokes nostalgia by embodying the reverse of it, which I found quite interesting! The line “Time traps all good people to watch the sunset” is poetic and one of the lyrical highlights on the track, while the line “Sundowners on the run” repeats itself in an anthemic fashion.
