Life on Thin Ice delivers captivating Electronica: “As Days Went By”

Life on Thin Ice is a music project by electronic music producer Kirill Yurchev. Based in Cyprus, the artist is self-admittedly inspired by 90’s British electronic music and primarily works within the genres of electronica and Intelligent Dance Music. His debut EP “As Days Went By” was recorded during the pandemic lockdowns in the UK and is now available for streaming everywhere!

The EP starts off with the track Greenfield (On Fire) which brings in some serious sombre and prolonged synths. This sets a very calm ambience and an almost meditative environment while also giving us a glimpse of the sonic palette Life of Thin Ice is going to be using throughout the rest of the project. Slow percussion, ethereal keys and a bass line filled with gravitas keeps a listener focused; all building up to an all-encompassing climatic end.
Followed by Serial Groove Respecter Club, this track places all its concentration on its percussion that goes much harder than the rather soothing previous track. It plays with sound effects to a great extent and makes liberal use of echoes. The electronification of the core melody is captivating and as a sucker for fast guitar riffs, I personally found great joy whenever the strings made their presence felt!

Brainstoppers has very light yet fast paced percussion whose intensity progressively increases. This cut is the closest to EDM the EP ever comes and this is largely because of the very rhythmic and groovy bass. Life on Thin Ice doesn’t miss setting up an ambience and while the track is chaotic in all the right ways, it also incorporates a much more modern and new wave sound. All throughout the EP, though specifically on this track, Life on Thin Ice is able to display his tight grasp on understanding pacing. He is able to suddenly switch to a very peaceful place and rebuild the energy from the place of serenity.
The EP closes out with Marine Stochastic which brings out the grungy parts of the sonic palette. The blurred-out synths, and a chaotic bass juxtaposed with very high-pitched whistle tones add texture to the song. The last minute of the track picks up pace, reminiscent of iconic acts like Daft Punk before giving the listener a very satisfactory ending.

Life on Thin Ice is able to pack a great deal of detail and intricate production into the short EP. While largely sticking to a singular sound, he is able to bring in a variety of sonic elements that are neither simple, predictable or re-creatable! While the project does run the risk of coming off as monotonous, the Herculean task of keeping a listener hypnotised using only instrumental production cannot be underestimated. Life on Thin Ice is an exciting new artist capable of delivering captivating IDM! Make sure to check out their debut EP “As Days Went By” here:
