Yosef Gutman presents a mixed palette of emotions with his jazz album, “Melodies of Light”

Yosef Gutman can paint you a picture of emotions. Brushes of melodies, colour palettes you might have never imagined come together with this experienced instrumentalist. His style borrows from a neoclassical, expressions that are individually drawn. There is a kind of drama in this that engulfs you, in ripples. This is his album, Melodies of Light, with Omri Mor

For more than an extended moment, hope is what we need. We associate that positivity with light, for good reason. His opening single Movement One is enough of a prelude to understand those emotions in motion. The soft percussion is what alludes perfectly to the joyous nature of the arrangement. Movement Two-Hamotzi creates a quicker, yet more defined swirl of the strings, piano and percussions. Though this is complex jazz, Yosef Gutman & Omri Mor ensure you hear memorable snips of the arrangement that are etched in the retina of your brain.

Yosef Gutman composes with his heart

There are overlays into other genres through the eyes of jazz as well. This is particularly observed in how they writesThe Dance. The swing is in the way the percussion flows, and the melodies that wrap around the fantastic foundation. Yosef also knows how to blend it immediately with songs like Hananya. With the active inclusion of silence, there are parts that diffuse the sound into these genuinely experiential pockets. Songs like Jonah’s Garden are a mixture of spices, like some minor melodies with the joyous orchards of green. Omri & Yosef have assembled something promising to the soul of music.

Omri Mor and Yosef have come together to create something truly beautiful. A pianist and composer of Iraqi and Argentine heritage, Omri has composed wondrous piano elements that seem to float into your psyche. Lionel Loueke on guitar and Ofri Nehemya make this team a successful quartet.

Yosef Gutman is the kind of composer that practices Nigunim. These are melodies from the heart, and that’s what we can hear in these compositions. Prayer for Rain is that soft whisper that would be perceived as a secret. A beautiful energy exudes from how he understands the music, and how he wants the audience to hear it. He can transport you to places as well, with the sheets of screenplay in Timbuktu. The catalogue is an exhaustive display of skill, feel and unique style of composition. Omri Mor ensures that the transitions are as natural as a whiff of wind or a gurgling rivulet.

A unified state of mind

I have always been scared of the webs that jazz weaves.  Technicality, spontaneity and a relishing freshness comes from each composition. However, Yosef blends these things with an intent that everyone can remember these songs. If not the melody itself, but how it forms this creative entity that changes with every listen. The choice of chords opening Sunshine is what makes this evident. You can hum this after another listen, yet has the well-crafted stained-glass bubble that Yosef & Omri Mor display so proudly.

As he closes out the album, Yosef and Omri Mor have given you a delicious meal to enjoy. This is another direction from his album Upside Down Mountain, which he released last year. As far as melodies go, this artist will continue to scintillate us with his impressive work. Listen to his album here and follow him for more that is definitely to come!

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
