Belgium-based composer and musician Yannis Koser is quickly making a name for himself as an avant-garde visionary in contemporary and eclectic music. Drawing inspiration from his childhood muse, an abstract painting canvas, Yannis channels his imaginative spirit into compositions that intricately articulate human emotions and the symphony of nature. On his latest piece, “Polar Aurora”, he manages to charm– and then some; keep reading for my thoughts!
Played on the piano, Yannis leaves no experimental stone unturned right from the get go– be it the odd meters and the polyrhythms going on in the background, or the steadily ascending scales and descending registers on the piano; or the musical motifs that he seems to spend a bar more than usual on; everything about this piece screams free-spirited, at will, and expressive. It’s almost as if we hear a projection, an image of Yannis’ true state of mind in every note, and that is beyond impressive.

The energy dynamic on the piano is another thing worth commenting on– Yannis plays heavy, and he plays with surety; each note rings out with the hammer, creating a drive of passion and intensity that make this track an even more pleasant listen than one would expect; and the way that musical motifs on this track weave seamlessly into the other, leaves nothing to yet be desired. In terms of melodic and rhythmic complexity, “Polar Aurora” is undoubtedly up there– with long, slow-building sections of energy that dally between different tonics, different meters, and different emotions that come through in the expressions, while still all maintaining that undertone of raw, free-spirited energy that we’ve grown to appreciate a lot on “Polar Aurora”.
