Inside “Unwinding Spire,” Pinealhead’s Psychedelic Rock Opener

Pinealhead’s track Unwinding Spire, a bass-led psychedelic rock track inspired by 70s prog like Genesis, King Crimson, and Pink Floyd. It opens their album Reality Culture, unfolding through shifting sections with cinematic textures, dynamic builds, and a bass that carries both rhythm and melody.

Unwinding Spire opens with a piano melody that sounds like something you’d hear at the start of a horror anime, and then the percussion jumps in and out, like it’s making you dance on your feet. You can picture it kicking off an intro that sets up the anime and its characters.

Then the song keeps moving. The percussion drops out and comes back in, and meanwhile the energy never really settles. Midway through, the electronic textures start bouncing off the walls, filling every gap, and the piano underneath turns darker, almost like something you’d hear at a funeral, but still slightly cheery in a weird, anxious way because of how often the textures move around, scraping and filling the sound constantly.

At the same time, everything builds. Once it hits that midpoint, all the instruments crash in together, overwhelming, and then break apart again. It feels like a friend group splitting in a hallway, and suddenly you’re alone. Then it turns into a chase. The sound gets closer and louder, and you’re just in reach of being caught.

Unwinding Spire doesn’t sit still for even a second and mirrors an actual unwinding spire. The sound coils tight, holds all that tension, and then it snaps and releases in sharp bursts. Spilling unstably while still carrying energy and movement.
