Exploring Sonic Landscapes with Pop: Stykket’s ‘I’m A Stranger’

Sometimes, age is but just another number– with the new wave of musicians flowing in getting ever so slightly younger, we oldfolk would miss out if we didn’t strap in for the journey. Today, we talk about “I’m A Stranger”, by Stykket; Stykket is a 21-year-old singer and songwriter hailing from Norway. Currently residing in a quaint small town in Norway, how does he manage to sway me with his music? Keep reading for my thoughts!

Expansive soundscapes, sky-high atmospheres, with simplistic production themes; that is how I would describe the sound of this song. From the very first second, we step into a large world of sounds, seemingly tiny sounds coming out of nowhere– all with purpose, of course, and it really is quite something, the way those various elements weave themselves into the cloth of the song so effortlessly.

As I hinted at earlier, the production themes remain simplistic, yet sound very, very graceful, especially when complemented by Stykket’s vocals, harmonies, and adlibs; and with the percussion holding it all together, and wafty pads and the soft acoustic guitar there to keep us company during the quiet parts of the song, “I’m A Stranger” displays a level of comfort Stykket has with playing with silence, and it shows through beautifully here.

The mixing and mastering play a big role in granting this song the vast stage it has, with very lever use of space and power to make sure the focus of the listener remains squarely between their two ears. The dynamics are excellently well managed, and this becomes even more impressive considering that this is Stykket’s debut into the world of streaming music. Bravo!

In conclusion, “I’m A Stranger” speaks to Stykket’s maturity as a songwriter, and I cannot wait to hear more from them. Check out the song here:
