No More Free Tier! Tidal Rolls Out Hi-Res Audio Subscription Plans

Norwegian-American music streaming platform Tidal says goodbye to Free Tier as well as the military/first responder discounts. “Users who were on the Tidal Free tier will need to switch to a paid Tidal subscription to continue enjoying Tidal’s services,” the company states.

From the 10th of April this year, the platform will merge HiFi and HiFi plus into a single subscription plan called ‘Tidal‘. This means customers can enjoy high-res FLACs, Dolby Atmos mixes, and Tidal MQA – all at the same price as the HiFi plan itself. HiFi is the lesser expensive plan that comes for $10.99/month only. This is the same price at which now ‘Tidal’ will be available. The decision is likely in order to compete with Amazon and Apple music’s hi-res plans. Existing HiFi Plus users will be automatically be switched to the new, cheaper ‘Tidal’ tier.

Meanwhile the HiFi and HiFi Family Plans are being consolidated into one single plan priced at $16.99/month called ‘Tidal Family subscription.‘ Student plans will be available at a discounted rate of $4.99/month.

DJ Integration Service

However for users who use the platform’s DJ Integration service, there are some serious considerations.

If anyone has used it within the last 90 days, the user will be charged an extra $9 a month. Users will have to manually remove this add on, otherwise they will be charged extra.

The decision might be in order to compete with Spotify’s much anticipitated ‘Supremium‘ subscription plan. Which is Spotify’s hi-res audio service that hasn’t materialized yet, after its announcement three years back.
