‘The Machine’ By Andrea Pizzo: An Unnnerving, Thought-provoking Alternative Track

‘The Machine’ by Andrea Pizzo and The Purple Mice is an unnerving Alternative electro-pop/electro-rock track that reflects on humanity’s relationship with machines in a critical, thought-provoking way. The song feels reminiscent of Ace of Base’s ‘Happy Nation’ in terms of its messaging, its disconcerting mood, and its use of instrumentation.

The Song’s Unnerving Mood

‘The Machine’ uses distorted guitars, synths & claps and layered belt-y vocals bookended by sounds of the dial-up internet starting up. These elements attempt to communicate a dissonance that highlights humanity’s reliance on artificial intelligence and algorithms.

The lyrics seem to be written from the perspective of artificial intelligence. The refrain “I keep watching you, each of you” highlights this. The words conjure up an image of large eyes frantically roving around a room. These eyes keeping a close eye on all movement. An unsettling image that highlights how pervasive and seemingly all-knowing AI algorithms are.

The vocal performance screams through with a jarring clarity which feels contrary to the instrumentation’s engaging but numbed repetitiveness. The melody seems pulled together cohesively by its jarring groove, communicating the song’s truth effectively.

‘The Machine’ communicates a layered message through everything from its lyrics to it’s imagery, makes it a compelling listen. The song seems comfortable in the uncomfortableness of its message.
