Wild Horse’s “Magpies” and the Weight of Seeking Genuine Connection

Wild Horse is a British indie rock band from East Sussex, formed by brothers Jack and Henry Baldwin and their longtime friend Ed Barnes, with Jade Snowdon joining later on keys and violin. They fuse indie rock with funk-driven guitar lines, blues undertones, and the confident flair of 60s/70s Brit Rock. Moreover, known for their nonstop writing, recording, and high-energy gigs, Wild Horse has built a reputation for pure momentum. Now, their latest release, Magpies, arrives as both a single and an EP, showcasing their vibrant and dynamic work.

Magpies opens with a steady rhythm that immediately draws you in. The drums give it a 70s groove, deliberate yet relaxed, letting the song breathe. From the first line, “No, I don’t trust nobody here in this room. There’s no friends in here, they wanna steal from you,” the song establishes a sense of guardedness. They make the listener imagine the fragility of personal connections.

Meanwhile the hook, “Can’t trust them magpies in my ear,” stretches in a whiny, sticky delivery. This also ties into the title, Magpies, because of the way people swoop in, steal the shiny parts of you, and leave you emptied out. Similarly, lines like “who are you to trust? Who are you to take what I do?” further deepen the sense of betrayal and self-preservation, creating an image of someone navigating the world cautiously.

Musically, the track maintains a grounded stability throughout. The rhythm never spikes or dips excessively, which reinforces the contemplative, wary tone of the lyrics. Additionally, the guitar work complements the vocals so perfectly that if you ever listened to a version of the song without the lyrics, you could still probably hear the words in your head. The melody also softens the hard edge of the theme, making the exploration of mistrust digestible for the listener.

Magpies highlights the scarcity of loyalty and the emotional strain of broken trust without sinking into despair. It feels like a quiet declaration: recognize the false, hold your line, and still seek real connection. Finally, the song balances tension with hope, keeping the listener aware of both risk and resilience.
