“Target Practice” by Spread: Rap mastery!

Spread, hailing from Chicago, IL, is a versatile artist known for his roles as a rapper, DJ, and producer. Born in Indianapolis, IN, he has been a prominent figure in the hip-hop scene of the Oakland/Bay Area for a significant period. Keep reading for my thoughts on his newest single, “Target Practice”!

Something that I was not expecting to hear when I first kicked this track on was the very downtempo beat that almost tricked me into thinking that this track would be downtempo, rhythmic-heavy rap– however, come as a surprise, Spread’s wordplay starts kicking in from the very first bar, and is amazing in its complexity– tons of compound rhymes, multi-syllable, multi-line rhymes were astounding, and remained so for the entirety of the track. Bravo!

As the first verse comes to an end, he delivers a menacing hook, all of its two lines, that lets the listener take a breather for all of two seconds before he pulls you back into the labyrinthine, sheer amazing rhymes– and the beat is there to complement at every step. There are tons of retro 60s cinema influences here, coupled with gritty synths that take are of the low-end, all of them woven together by the percussion, which, again, is a standout feature here.

Listening to “Target Practice” is hypnotizing. You’re drawn completely into the execution of the track, and there is no fannying about other things– and that is excellent for me, a rap purist. Check out “Target Practice” by Spread here!
