Cameron Mizell captures nature in a capsule with his album, “The Tree on Saffron Path”

Cameron Mizell is no stranger to musical epiphanies. From tastes and performance styles spanning pretty much the whole spectrum, he has brought into view albums that reflect the state of mind-his and anonymous, without words. A celebrated and in-demand session musician, you can hear the balance in his composition from purely experience in some places. This is his 8th album, The Tree on Saffron Path.

With a collection of fantastic artists, Cameron gives us imagery unlike any other. This album is a collection of memories, strung through emotion. The Rhythm of Language is enough to understand this. Captivating string melodies glide along this route, providing a rich, lush background of a natural trail. The guitars and strings confluence to create descriptive conversation, and it is layered perfectly.

Cameron Mizell charts the path

Songs like Never Felt the Wind are designed meticulously to be a picturesque frame. Melancholy creeps in slowly here, with the kind of arrangement chosen. As you hear it develop, there is a sense of appreciation for Cameron Mizell and his vision. In songs like this, the electric guitar brings a contemporary angle, like a retelling of a graphic story. It is fresh, ambitious  and leads to another incredible song called She Wants to Believe. The experience felt in each of the songs is crafted to the second.

It is also a tribute of sorts, looking at music through these live instruments alone. It leads to compositions purely limited to the language of music and the journeys it subsequently lays us on. An epic single like Unfolding is brought a joyous spine with just the way the guitars and strings interact. I’d call it neoclassical, yet fail in finding an apt-word for what Cameron Mizell has made.

A fusion of new elements

Guitar tones dominate songs like Remember When We Were Old. The dynamic play, the float and sink between instruments of the same album leads to some amazing music. It is one of the finest instrumental albums I’ve heard in a few years, an ode to the storytelling abilities of Cameron Mizell. An Unclaimed Piece of Land sounds like a discovery, a bit of magic along this trail. If you have been walking to the tree on Saffron Path, there is a fairytale dreams worth of imagery you can carry back to reality. Strange Behaviour has the mystique of wonderment, bewilderment and spaces of thought. The continuous, single note melody almost captures time within its seconds, making for an incredible attempt. The quick arpeggio of Light, Trapped Under Clouds has the vibrant energy of a visual like that.

Words translating to music is some of the toughest expressions to extend as a human. The second epic, Air Leaving Water is a slower, deliberate collection of melodies. The smooth, soft touch of the transitions are retained, long after the album is over. With this album, Cameron Mizell has shown us a path unlike any other to traverse. It is a path you can revisit, and something new will be found, in awe. Listen to his brilliant work here:

Self professed metalhead, moderately well read. If the music has soul, it's whole to me. The fact that my bio could have ended on a rhyme and doesn't should tell you a lot about my personality.
