Soma Laboratory Unveil High-End Experimental Synth : FLUX

Already known for its experimental synthesizers, Soma Laboratory has launched FLUX; a thermin-inspired high end synthesizer with unparalleled expressive capabilities. FLUX, the name suggests continuous movement. It merges the musicality and expression of classical instruments such as violin or even vocals, with modern technology. Thus we get a whole new enriched sound with new timbres as well as the flexibility of post-modern instruments. Add to this a revolutionary user interface.

Inspired by Leo Theremin’s Thereminvox, FLUX allows users to control sound through hand motions in the air. But instead of capacitive coupling of hands and antannae, the revolutionary synth functions on magnetic principles.

Magnetic bows, one in each hand interact with a multipolar magnetic sensor. This enables control over pitch, volume, and synthesis parameters. The magnetic bows’ spatial co-ordinates and angles control different parameters. The right hand bow can be used for octave changes, allowing a range of six continuous octaves, without transposing the keyboard. Where as the user can change which parameters are controlled by flipping the left bow, enabling control of up to twelve independent sound parameters.

Soma FLUX: A modern future proof instrument for academic music

FLUX allows immediate creation of a direct timbral composition . It has been designed as a modern instrument for academic music. In addition, different synthesis algorithms will be created as complete musical instruments for direct timbral control in the future. Also specially designed presets will allow the user to save and recall entire synth states.

FLUX features digital to analog convertors designed by Soma itself. It offers monophonic, duophonic, and polyphonic modes, along with ultra-modern special effects. Moreover, it offers powerful tools like distortion, FM and physical modeling, making it ideal for academic music.

FLUX will be shipping later this year. The pricing is yet to be announced.
