What comes as a surprise to the music community as well as fans, Foo Fighters reportedly fired John Freese, two years after he joined the band on May 2023.
Alternative rock band Foo Fighters have decided to part with drummer Jesse Freese, after two years of working with him post Taylor Hawkins‘ death (2022). The band cited a desire to move in a “different direction”. Freeze stated that the band had called him earlier this week to inform about the decision. A shocked and disappointed Freeze admitted he had no hard feelings although.
“I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band,” he wrote. “In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine.”
“Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters‘ list,” joked a carefree Freeze.
Celebrities including prog-metal band Dream Theater drummer Mark Portnoy and actor-writer-producer Wendi McLendon-Covey expressed their concern.

“Damn… I’m shocked! You seemed to be the perfect fit!!” wrote Mark Portnoy. Whereas Wendi McLendon-Covey wrote, “WTF?????? But hey, you’ll always be fine…. And you might actually be dodging a bullet. Love to you and your family!”
Over the years John Freese has played with a number of reputed bands apart from Foo Fighters. The list ranges from Guns N’ Roses to Nine Inch Nails. A prolific session and touring drummer, Freese has appeared on over 400 albums since 1986. His work has earned him “the pristine reputation as one of the most in-demand session drummers in the business,” according to Variety.
