“Significance” by Blueburst: A masterpiece rock album, with delectable genre fusions

Blueburst is the creation of an unexpected emerging artist, Craig Douglas Miller, a guitarist and vocalist. At the age of 50, he’s launching his debut album, rekindling a music career he had previously abandoned. Blueburst bring with them a lush, guitar-based alt-rock sound, rooted in 80s alternative and post-punk music that all comes together to pack quite a punch. Here’s “Significance” by them:

The album opens out with “Vanish”, quite the energetic alt rock track with a punk-esque drumming style, replete with wafty synths in the hook, and supported by clean strummed guitar riffs that ring out loud, all packaged together with energy-filled choruses and enthusiastic vocal presentation. As we navigate to the solo, it is quite a treat to the ears with the extensive use of wah and other effects on the lead, that make it quite enjoyable to listen to.

As we segue into the second song on Significance, “Executioner’s Song”, we immediately go into a bit of a darker, gloomier realm, sort of sounding like what “Hallowed Be Thy Name” by Iron Maiden would sound if in the style of Blueburst; and the end product ends up sounding beautiful and graceful in execution more so than anything else, conveying this darker and more somber emotion with just as much panache as the upbeat opener.

“Senseless” takes us into a more dramatic emotional presentation, coupled with odd meters on the drumming that give this song a flow of its own that becomes quite infectious, and grows on you very quickly; with the lyrical themes in this song serving as the icing on the cake, and the melodic arrangement, to top it all off, is powerful, and emotive.

As we start approaching the middle of the album, “Kick My Tires” hits us with a significantly more grunge, 90s Nirvana sound; and I was left impressed at how good the song is at reminding me that I, too, have a non-conformant, rebellious side to me, itching to be let out loose; and let loose I did; with my head bobbing to the rhythm, my hands almost lifting themselves up to air-guitar the solo (a spectacular attempt by me, if I say so myself). It’s all here– the screaming, overdriven tone; the tremolo picking, and the dual-tracks to give this track even more power than already.

Some other special mentions on “Significance” include “Amplify Me”, a much more surf/pop rock number that still retains Blueburst’s signature sound and throws in a couple of odd meters to throw off the listener just enough to keep them hooked, looking for resolution and closure, which is given to them quite elegantly not long after. The acoustic version of “Senseless” just takes all the emotions in the original, and drives it up to 11, making it, by a margin, one of the most emotive songs on the whole album.

In conclusion, “Significance” by Blueburst is the kind of album that will satisfy your craving for a wide variety of genres, and it still retains the golden touch of the unique sound, the unique voice of the artist. I give this album a two-thumbs-up recommendation! Check out the album here:
