“Trust” by Joe Lington: Upbeat, groovy hip-hop

Joe Lington, an R&B/Soul artist, initiated his musical journey with vocal and piano lessons under Lisa Gold Gervais. He later became a soloist in a gospel choir. Simultaneously, he delved into music production, mixing, and mastering, acquiring invaluable skills. His deep-rooted passion for R&B and Soul soon emerged, influencing his music, which elegantly pays homage to artists like Sisqo and Keith Sweat while showcasing his distinct style. Joe’s multilingual talent allows him to sing in French, English, and Cameroonian languages. On his album, “Trust”, explores more of his RnB/hip-hop sound. Keep reading for my thoughts!

In true Joe Lington style, the album starts off with an intro track, and this time, it’s “She Got Me”– replete with a nice, swingy beat while Joe cooks French rhymes on top, weaving English bars as well in the middle, which quite caught my fancy from the get go– because to rhyme in two different languages simultaneously is no easy task, and I’m glad to report that Joe more than elegantly demonstrates that here.

The second track on the album is called “Ce Soir”, a more upbeat and pop-like hip-hop track, with acoustic drums and nice adlibs, that sound uplifting and very radio-friendly in that I would listen to it gladly on full volume with the windows down while I take twisties on the mountains– and I’m loving this album so far!

As we move to the song “Ce Monde”, we’re introduced to a more downtempo RnB sound with Rhodes pianos, and a nice backbeat rhythm that sounds great with Joe’s voice holding the meter together, with the creative mixing of the adlibs quite striking my fancy. Similarly, “I Gotta Be With You” also stands out in the quirky and experimental production process I could hear very distinctively.

The production and the vocals on this album, are, by far, a big highlight– with clear vocals, well-separated adlibs and dual-tracks, and great rhyming schemes coupled with engaging instrumentals like the guitar solo on “Ce Monde”, with it all tying together to create something so distinctly Joe, it makes me appreciate the unique sound signature he has– a feat that many musicians aspire to.

To call it a wrap, “Trust” by Joe Lington is a great listen and will make a great addition to your playlist this week. Check out the album here:
