About the Artist
London-based trio mUmbo formed in 2021 as a collaboration between solo artists Doug MacGowan and Emma Semple, later joined in 2022 by Italian drummer Antonio Dale. Doug fills the space with guitars, banjo, and bass, while Emma’s vocals weave through the melodies, accompanied by her violin and viola. Together with Antonio’s drums, they create a sound that feels full, textured, and alive.
Moreover, they draw from rock, indie pop, folk, blues, and jazz, taking inspiration from artists like Mazzy Star, Goldfrapp, Little Feat, Ry Cooder, and Johnny Marr. mUmbo’s music emphasizes atmosphere and emotion, producing a lyrical, wistful, and cinematic quality that pulls listeners in, with each track feeling both intimate and expansive through its focus on texture and storytelling.
Their latest EP, When It Was Quiet, released on November 21, 2025, features three tracks: You Can Do What You Want To, You Know The Song, and Worm Moon. Each song blends subtle instrumentation with evocative vocals, creating a dreamlike and reflective experience.

The Album
You Can Do What You Want To opens the EP with anticipatory drums that gradually flow in like a gentle breeze. The vocals feel wistful and dreamy, yet grounded, guiding the listener with a warm, steady presence. The lyrics, “The wind has changed but the rain, the rain, doesn’t touch me at all” and “Lean on the window as we drive,” evoke a moment of calm reflection, as if the song is telling you to slow down and trust yourself. Meanwhile, the rich vocals almost play with the beats, soft but deliberate. The track feels calming, slow, and powerful all at once.
Next, You Know The Song opens with a guitar and the familiar wistful voice, this time brighter, as if sunlight filters through memory. Overlapping vocals enhance the texture, giving the song a sense of familiarity and intimacy. Lyrics such as “You know, you know…you know the song because I’ve been singing it for so long,” feel intimate yet expansive. Furthermore, the climax leans on instrumentals filling the space softly, ending with cymbals rising and falling in a natural, unforced cadence.

Lastly, Worm Moon enters with subtle, heartbeat-like sounds. The melody feels darker, yet a hint of brightness lingers. Moreover, the violin enriches the texture, giving depth and a reflective tone. Lyrics like “When the moonlight falls across these stoney walls and there’s illumination to this situation and all the things that didn’t matter” capture the song’s contemplative mood. This song feels somber yet comforting, capturing that mix of sadness and beauty when staring at the moon and feeling the world shift around you. In addition, the track’s length allows it to breathe, letting the listener sink into its atmosphere.
Together, these three tracks create a cinematic journey across sound and mood. Each track balances warmth and dreaminess while remaining emotionally grounded. Furthermore, the intentional sequencing draws the listener through moments of calm, light, and shadow. Finally, mUmbo’s When It Was Quiet leaves a lingering sense of intimacy and shows how texture, voice, and instrumentation can shape a world you can feel as much as hear.
