Soft Focus – Lazygirl | Soft

A relaxing drone of a Rhodes piano somewhere in the background, complemented by a peppy groove and a soothing voice to boot. This is “Soft Focus” by Lazygirl in a nutshell. In the indie pop scene, artists have consistently been moving towards an increasingly synth-heavy, production-focused sound; and “Soft Focus” is unique in its execution of the same concept– blending elements that the layman listener may shun in their head until they actually listen to a well-done example of the same. Keep reading to know why I think so.

The song starts off slow and mellow, taking me back to 3 am study sessions, a bunch of coffee and a mellow atmosphere in which I’d work in peace. Once the song starts picking up its pace, it settles into a healthy, peppy kind of groove that has your head bobbing to the rhythm. As a progressive music nerd, it is easy for somebody like me to crave constant math-ery (if that is a word) to be going on in what I listen to– but this song brought me back to grass and made me appreciate the simplicity on display here. Minimalism really can make a big impact, and this song is a standing example of that.

The instruments used are a mix of synths and classic sounding pianos, with lush reverb that permeates the mix. There is an excellent groove and a lively jive to this song that immediately makes it a comfortable listen, and that is something I truly, truly appreciate.

Overall, I have no moans or niggles about this track. Lazygirl does an excellent job delivering their vocals, with the harmonies in play an added cherry on the cake. This unequivocally is the kind of song that would feature in more than one of my playlists, and it gets full marks in my book. Check out the song here!
