Corey El – Gold Soul | Eclectic Grooves

Corey El is an American-based musician, songwriter and producer. As an avid follower of Funk, Soul and Hip Hop, Corey has gained experience and knowledge beyond his years. His music is usually classified as Nü Soul, however, it goes well beyond that. Corey El has just released his latest album, Gold Soul. The album has ten tracks and a run time of 37 minutes.

The first track on the album, Sophisticated, features the FAM Band. The track is extremely funky, utilising classic funk elements such as syncopated bass lines and infectious drum grooves. However, I find Corey’s vocals are the standout feature mostly because of how old school and on-point they are. This track sets up the album and it does it really well. Additionally, Outta Touch showcases Corey’s knowledge of all three genres. The track uses an eclectic approach, using the best of Funk, Soul and Hip Hop. It sounds like the three genres blended with a touch of R&B and you’ve got Corey El.

Like We Got has its dynamics down right. The infectious drums and percussion will have you tapping your foot along to the track. Corey does such a good job on the vocals with the delay and reverb effects. This track, especially, feels like such an R&B vibe. Dissimilarly, Waste Your Time seems to take things up a notch towards a relatively more provocative feeling. The lyrics are pretty deep and intricate. One thing I really like about R&B, Funk and Soul is how beautiful the lyrics are. The beat is like icing on the cake with how complementary it is to the vocals.

Moving on to Love Of My Life, we have a track that slows it all down. This feels like the most R&B track on the album with the backing vocals and slow drum groove. The guitar adds a bit of tinniness to the atmosphere but, again, Corey’s vocals just steal the show for me. On Try It, we have a brilliant guitar riff to introduce the track before we’re met with a groovy as heck bass line. The music really fills you up and makes a very compelling case towards moving along to it. I really enjoy the production work on this track too. Corey El shows a significantly great amount of experience and knowledge in his mix. The track dynamics are so well-placed and worked out that you’d never be able to tell if it was produced at home or in a professional studio.

7 is the seventh track on the album, and perhaps the most aptly titled track. While it feels like something of an interlude, it is most definitely a track you shouldn’t skip. It has the entire Corey El package that we’ve described so far and more. Ghost is another track that, perhaps, deserves more recognition. It’s a groovy track that keeps things flowing on the album. I’ve spoken a lot about the drums and vocals, but they’re just so impeccable on the entire album.

Fly Away kind of brings things back up, but maintains that R&B, Soul, Funk and Hip Hop dynamic that we’ve heard throughout the album. Similarly, Wait For You features a similar set, but I think it’s worth noting that it’s one of the better intros I’ve heard in a while. Wait For You makes me reminiscent of the early 2000’s R&B scene. I think Corey El knows exactly what he’s doing with his music and it really shows.
