Billie Eilish, R.E.M., Kacey Musgraves and Others Sign Petition Against AI for Infringement on Artists’ Rights

Artist run non profitable organisation Artist Rights Alliance (ARA) has issued an open letter against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to infringe upon and devalue the rights of artists. More than 200 artists including Billie Eilish, R.E.M., Kacey Musgraves, Elvis Costello, Nicki Minaj, Jason Isbell, Mac DeMarco, Jon Bon Jovi, Camila Cabello and more have signed the letter, supporting the cause. ARA calls on all AI developers, technology companies, plaforms and digital music services “to pledge that they will not develop or deploy AI music-generation technology, content, or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work.”

As per the letter in spite of it’s several benefits, “some platforms and developers are employing AI to sabotage creativity and undermine artists, songwriters, musicians and rightsholders.”

How can the misuse of AI destroy the music ecosystem?

The letter also warns that some of the biggest and most powerful companies are, without permission, using the artist’s work to train AI models. It states that these efforts are directly aimed at replacing the work of artists with massive quantities of AI created “sounds” and “images”. In recent times, artists have had their royalty pools substantially diluted by this phenomenon. “For many working musicians, artists and songwriters who are just trying to make ends meet, this would be catastrophic.”

In addition, the petition further states that if unchecked, AI will “set in motion a race to the bottom” that will degrade the value of the artists’ work. Artists will not receive fair compensation if this prevention takes place.

The letter clearly demands a stop to this assault on human creativity. “We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creators’ rights, and destroy the music ecosystem.” Click here to read the full note.
