Space Remedy tell us about composing with true harmony in their EP, “Nothing left to Chase”

Space Remedy changes the sonic expanse of what is possible to perceive. This is not your ordinary play and pause moment. These prog rock titans from the indie prog rock music scene  in India have always been crushing it-and there is a depth to their music that will always inspire you. Carving spaces in the vast expanse, the band is able to fabricate a cocoon of healing and understanding-through music. This is their title single from their album of the same name, Nothing left to Chase.

The journey so far

1) Since Physicalism (2022), you’ve been developing your music. What is Nothing Left to Chase about?

Physicalism wasn’t actually the first release by Space Remedy. The band has been active since2016, and the very first song written together was Vagabond. While Vagabond was relatively simple in terms of structure and technicality, a surf-inspired instrumental, it marked the beginning of the band’s journey. This phase was followed by songs like Be Here Now and Physicalism, which were released as singles during the band’s early years, as well as Deformity, which is now being revisited and re-released as a reprised version on the upcoming album.

Because of this, the band’s sound has been continuously evolving since 2016, not just after 2022. Nothing Left to Chase holds a particularly special place emotionally and philosophically. The song came together very organically. Abhilash introduced a guitar riff, the band began jamming around it, and Shivam wrote the lyrics instinctively, responding to the emotional state of that moment. Philosophically, the song represents a sense of rest, a realization that no matter how much one chases, the act of chasing never truly ends.

The protagonist reaches a point where choosing to stop feels natural and necessary. There is calm in that realization rather than defeat. During production, the band was very mindful of preserving this laid-back, grounded energy. Even while aiming for a deep, crisp, and full sound, care was taken to avoid aggression that could disturb the song’s sense of stillness.

Finding depth in compositions

As an experience, you would definitely call this one of the band’s most developed aural experiences. Make sure you’re wearing headphones, production has ensured the depth of each layer is felt within the epidermis of the skin, and the soul. Over this 7 minute epic track, soothing guitar elements float over to create the intro with a synth pad background.

2) In terms of tone exploration, where has the band reached?

With this album, Space Remedy consciously aimed for a cohesive and identifiable sonic footprint. A major contributor to this cohesion is the sound of the drums. The band is deeply passionate about recording real acoustic drums and strongly prefers them over programmed alternatives. Varun’s approach to rhythm focuses on odd time signatures that feel melodic and musical rather than rigid or mathematical.

This approach resulted in a drum sound that is both fat and crisp, one that anchors the mix while keeping the high-end tight and the mids and highs clear. Guitar tones have also evolved significantly.

The duality of tone achieved

The band blends analog and digital elements, and Abhilash’s role has expanded with richer guitar parts and more expressive solos throughout the album. Guitars are used more intentionally now, allowing keyboards, textures, and even silence to occupy space when needed. While the compositions remain guitar-centric, they are more breathable and less congested than before.

Rather than any element taking attention, it all comes together to unidirectionally guide you to a different kind of nirvana. Vocals have matured since the previous release Endless Grief from their triple release earlier this year. Chemistry is off the charts, becoming one beautiful organic entity creating such soulful music that harnesses energy.

Space Remedy explore lyrical layers

3) Your lyrics add a deeper philosophical layer. What has changed and what has remained?

Lyrically, Space Remedy has always been inclined toward themes of philosophy, life, and emotional states that extend beyond conventional romantic narratives. Shivam has consistently gravitated toward writing about experiences such as grief, guilt, freedom, wonder, and introspection, emotions that are often underrepresented in mainstream songwriting. This is also why progressive rock as a genre resonates so strongly with the band, it allows room to explore a wide emotional spectrum.

This philosophical approach has been present since the beginning, even in instrumental tracks like Vagabond, where the feeling of freedom was expressed purely through music. What has evolved over time is maturity and effortlessness. Nothing Left to Chase reflects one of the band’s most mature lyrical moments, exploring the quiet state of being done, not sad, not happy, but consciously choosing to stop chasing.

The writing process has become more fluid and natural, allowing lyrics to flow more organically with the music rather than feeling imposed upon it.

Preparing a spatial voyage

You’re left with wonder not only with the lyrics, but how such a lucid and mature composition even comes to be. Space Remedy makes sure there aren’t forced elements, taking away the flow of the whole song. You drift through a journey, the winds guiding you with purpose and precision. In the ambient themes, you can find punctuations that accent the live energy Space Remedy bring.

4) Tell us about the band’s journey and how compositions come together.

The band’s workflow changed significantly during and after the COVID period. Earlier, writingsessions were highly collaborative and in-person, with members meeting frequently to jam and develop ideas together. Post-COVID, much of the process shifted toward a hybrid and remote approach.

Shivam is heavily involved in arranging and production, often developing structured drafts from ideas initially explored together. Each member then replaces draft parts with their own performances. Varun records acoustic drums once the arrangement reaches a mature stage.

Abhilash adds distinctive character through his expressive guitar work, while Mukesh contributes atmospheric piano and synth parts that elevate the emotional depth of the compositions. This layered process allows each song to evolve organically while retaining a strong collective identity.

Playing music live

5) What is the most challenging track to recreate live?

As I’m Drowning stands out as the most challenging track to perform live. The production is highly layered, particularly in the first half of the song. One of the biggest challenges lies in recreating the unconventional guitar delay patterns, which are custom-designed to fill specific rhythmic gaps rather than follow standard delay subdivisions.

Additionally, the song demands tight coordination between rhythm and vocals, complex guitarsolos, and layered synth and arpeggiator parts toward the end. While the band has come very close to matching the studio version in a live setting, As I’m Drowning continues to be a song that evolves with each performance.

Understanding, through the song

6) How does the band know when a song has reached its organic end?

For Space Remedy, knowing when a song is complete is largely intuitive. There comes a pointwhere all the elements feel locked together, where the rhythm section, harmonies, and textures form a unified whole. At this stage, small changes no longer enhance the song, they simply alter it.

The band has also become increasingly aware of the power of restraint. Silence is treated as an active element, and layers are added only when they truly serve the song. This philosophy of less is more has played a significant role in shaping the band’s current sound and sense of completion.

7) Is there a tour planned around the album?

Yes, a tour is very much part of the plan. Space Remedy consciously chose not to perform live through most of 2025 in order to focus fully on completing the album. Given the length and complexity of the material, preparing for live performances requires significant time and attention.

With the album expected to release around January, the band plans to begin with a Bangalore album release show, followed by performances in major cities across India. There are also plans to collaborate and tour alongside a like-minded band, creating stronger shows both musically and logistically.

While international touring is a long-term goal, particularly in regions like the UK, Brazil, and Chile where the band has an active listener base, the immediate focus is on expanding reach and establishing a strong live presence around the new album.

An EP to truly behold

If they’re telling you about the philosophical layer that shapes their songwriting, they do so with finesse. The song doesn’t pull from underneath you like a carpet, but becomes the same magical one that can guide you. Find yourself in new ways here:
