As the instrumental slowly creeps up, you can prepare yourself for the envelope that will surround you. A two chord change is what dominates the verse section of the song, and the words carry gravity. In this 6 minute storytelling spree, Prince of Sweden has prepared the listener for an emotional circus. There is a pained “know” in his voice, telling a story when you know the conclusion. A joke when you can’t hide the punchline. The chord reminds you that it lingers behind, with all the layers that congregate. There are lead elements that make the effect travel for longer, creating what is essentially a short movie. It is an incredible dive into songwriting, how to captivate the listener while speaking your truth.
