Residing in the vibrant city of New York, Lew McKenzie is a versatile artist who excels as a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer. Drawing inspiration from the legends of R&B, soul, and jazz, Lew skillfully crafts a nostalgic sound that pays homage to the classics. In all his musical endeavors, his objective is to evoke a feeling of timeless opulence, achieved through his creativity, artistic enrichment, and a dedication to igniting passion across diverse cultures and genres. On his latest single, “Alone”, he leaves an impression and a quarter– keep reading for my thoughts!

There is so much to unpack from the very start of the song here; from the various styles coming together to create an amalgamation that welcomes you to keep listening from the second you lay your ears upon it, “Alone” does a great job of building interest in the listener right from the go. The gritty synth bass and the spacey plucks are nice additions on top of the guitars and the pianos that strike your ear; and once the vocals set in, it all rounds up to be quite a pleasant sound.

As the song settles into its laid-back downtempo energy, the chord progressions being adopted make for quite an interesting listen. The jazz influences are very evident here, with unconventional cadences and harmonies that constantly intrigue the listener. There is a lot of synth activity in the background at this point, as well, and it all makes for tons of war candy to feast your ears upon.

There exists a rapped verse around the middle third of the song, which is also well-executed with tight, straight rhyming schemes that play effortlessly between lines and measures. The hook that follows right after, serves as an interlude into the synth-heavy second part of the song, where we really get to see the electronic music chops that went into the song’s making. I was left thoroughly impressed!

In conclusion, “Alone” by Lew McKenzie represents a great example of what it is to experiment in music, pushing beyond the boundaries of what one would consider easy-listen pop music. Check out the song here!
