“Quasar viola” by Massimo De Simone: The answer to what means it to be an experimental musician

Massimo De Simone is a versatile singer-songwriter, seamlessly navigating the realms of pop, rock, and musical soundtracks. Hailing from Rome, he is characterized by his upbeat and sunny disposition, mirroring his music’s joyful essence. His latest work, “Quasar viola”, is a delight to listen to– how? Keep reading for my thoughts!

The whole song has this aura of grandeur, mystery and drama that envelops you from the very start– from the angelic aria-esque intro courtesy of Cinzia D’Astola Perroni, to his gentle voice that soothes you into the meat of the song. My personal bias prefers European languages for lyrics, bred of my long love for the French band, Alcest, or Austrian black metal outfit Harakiri For The Sky; but even that aside, the Italian lyrics just have a quality of gentleness, as they dally effortlessly with the rest of the composition, which finds firm roots in classical music, making this song replete with technical complexities and an unconventional structure that jumps at you immediately, and I mean this in the best possible ways.

The production is layered, deep, and complex, with an instrument for every single frequency range– be it the drums, or the strings that gently accompany the vocalists on their journey, or the lilt of the piano in the background; it all comes together rather beautifully, as I found myself running out of good enough words to truly describe the emotions this song was putting me through at that moment.

Speaking of the tonal qualities and the emotional range of the song, it is diverse; with splendour, with mystery and intrigue and a multitude of other emotions that left me in absolute awe of the infinite possibilities with music and musicianship.

To call it wraps, I think “Quasar viola” is an absolutely beautiful example of why we, as humans, appreciate music; for the emotions it makes us feel, and the journeys it makes us undertake in our heads. This song gets a two-thumbs-up recommendation from me; check out the song here!
