“Modern Lies”, by The Breakdown: A soul-filling rock number

Making inroads into the London music scene, the grunge/melodic rock band The Breakdown bring their infectious energy to our speakers on their latest single, “Modern Lies”— keep reading for my thoughts!

Fusing iconic British influences and bringing their sound very well into their own, with their own interpretations, The Breakdown effectively leverage all aspects of a band ensemble to bring you charm, energy and emotion, all packaged quite nicely into “Modern Lies”. The incorporation of the distant lead electric guitars with the high-tempo drumming and the charming clean rhythm guitars that reside off to the sides of the mix, is also a great thing. The vocals also shine with their sky-high registers in the harmony layers, and great amounts of control on the main vocals. Take all of these elements and throw them together well, and you get a track as electric as “Modern Lies” to listen to.

The bass is an easy standout on this track, with great low-end control and nice licks throughout the song— not to overextend, but still to strike the balance so as to not underwhelm is a trait with The Breakdown, and that holds especially true with the basses, too. As the song does draw to a close, we’re left wanting for the energy to keep going as the breakdown comes, and the chorus repeats, leaving us hankering for the rewind. The mix and master take things to another level, with excellent balance and detail in the highs, and great control in the lows, contributing to a rewarding listening experience to even the discerning listener.
