“Promise Me You’ll Be Alright”, by BermudaCal: A spicy combination of jazz and hip-hop!

BermudaCal blends jazz with hip hop, trap, and UK garage, showcasing his signature saxophone melodies inspired by mentor Kent Hayward. Producing his music solo, Cal maintains creative control, moving seamlessly between London and Bermuda without compromising his unique sound. Keep reading for my thoughts on his latest single, “Promise Me You’ll Be Alright”!

Right from the start of “Promise Me You’ll Be Alright”, BermudaCal’s influences from jazz and swing are evident in the way that the song is produced. Brasses and sliding basses fly off his pen and into your speakers as he intertwines his verses rather adeptly, weaving a nice acoustic drum track in there for extra measure. This drum part evolves into a full on section in the bridge section, BermudaCal’s vocals and the tight, precise drumming holding the fort together.

The vocals also shine with their storytelling, and their swingy, almost microtimed flow, and BermudaCal holds it together quite well with the phrasing and the rhyming, exploring rhyme schemes that tie into one another quite effectively, while the adlibs make for an extra dimension to the vocals, contributing to their complexity and overall presentation, which is great!

The production, as a whole, is the easy limelight-grabber of the show, followed closely by the rapped vocals. The production brings in Kendrick-esque bold piano stabs, layered very elegantly with the aria-like high vocals that waft around in the background, while the energy is focused front and centre, typical of trap-influenced hip-hop; and the blend of elements is truly one to be experienced.

The mix and master do not disappoint, either, holding the energy of the vocals firmly in control and smoothly at that— especially with the candour and the style in the rapping, the balance is maintained rather nicely, and it all comes together for a nice, tight, cohesive sound that is a joy to listen to.
